Basic obstacle detection solution

Basic obstacle detection approach that does not require localisation information from PAIKKA to function. Instead, it takes velocity and steering angle as an input, and monitors the immediate surroundings of a mobile robot. It is typically used as a soft stop before actual safety mechanisms (physical safety bumper or safety lidar) are triggered.

SUPPORTED SENSORS

KILPI supports the following sensor modalities:

  • 3D LIDAR(s)
  • TACTILE SENSORS

FEATURES

KILPI forms two zones around the robot:

  • The “stopping zone” is a zone in which no presence of any obstacles is allowed. Moving the machine would be unsafe if there is any obstacle present in that zone. Usually, the machine will automatically continue its operation if the obstacle disappears from the stopping zone. However, this is always a control feature definition that can change case by case.
  • The “slow down zone” is a zone in which the machine should start slowing down, if obstacles appear.

Obstacles are monitored on both zones. If the lidar point count exceeds a configurable value of points, the zone is considered occupied. The outcome is that the software will output a multiplier that can be used to adjust the speed of the vehicle.

BENEFITS

SIMPLE
No location information needed. No extrinsic calibration needed.
COST EFFICIENCY
Uses normal 3D LiDAR already used in other products, like in PAIKKA. Bumpers (tactile sensors) are cheap, reliable and easy to install.
FLEXIBILITY
Can be modified or complimented easily with additional sensors.
