POST LOGIMAT 2024 REVIEW

A week has passed since the LogiMAT 2024 ended. We have been busy processing the leads we got from the event. We are a bit overwhelmed by the sheer number and quality of those leads. Supporting our friends from Navitec Systems, our partners in the logistics industry, our team (Jussi, Jose and David) did their share of the heavy lifting, i.e., standing long hours on the stand and promoting our shared solutions for indoor/outdoor environments. Solutions, which are based on 3D LiDARs and providing reliable, robust and accurate GNSS-free feature-based localisation in all-weather conditions.

INDOOR AND OUTDOOR

Even though most of the intralogistics business is still happening indoors and based on 2D-based feature-based localisation or supportive infrastructure-based solutions, the things are changing. Instead of being forced to have several different machines (manned or autonomous), one type for indoor operations and another for outdoors, there seems to be a clear need to introduce autonomous machines, which can operate in both environments equally well – in all-weather conditions. A big majority of those applications is based on flatbeds and tuggers, but forklifts are slowly following as more sophisticated perception solutions needed for pallet detection and handling start to mature. Airport and port areas are leading the way in these use cases.

TURNKEY DESIRES

Equally evident was the need to have carefree turnkey solutions, meaning that the customers would, in many cases, like to buy the whole package (the machine, the software, the fleet management system, the training, the commissioning, and the maintenance) from a single entity – and then just press the button and start saving money. That is easily understandable, but in most cases, impossible, or at least economically non-viable, way to proceed.

WAITING FOR A MIRACLE?

The few pioneering companies, which integrate the whole system are in good positions. Big OEMs, who really own the market, are still waiting and preparing their technology. They have time because they will anyway win in the end. Smaller technology providers are trying to push the OEMs to use their solutions. Many people are still waiting for the Visual SLAM to be the ultimate game-changer and they seem to believe that it will happen, also outdoors – we don’t.
